After dropping Joe and Nari off at the airport I continued on south to check out Royal National Park for the day. The park is immediately south of the city and encompasses eucalyptus-covered ridges, waterfalls, and rugged cliff-lined coasts. I went for a short walk to a waterfall where I relaxed in my hammock and listened to birds and water.
Then I drove to Wattamolla Beach where I found great cliff jumps up to 16m height off of cross-bedded sandstone cliffs flanking a tidal estuary. I enjoyed jumping and watching the theatrics of some of the locals...like back flipping into a belly flop...
Lastly I drove to Garie Beach and decided to go for a nice walk along the coast to the south. This involved some fun rock scrambling and led to several nice, but rugged, beaches. There were some beautiful fracture and diagenetic patterns in the sandstone shore platforms and I enjoyed all the foreign shells and sea life. I could not resist a brief swim at Burning Palms Beach. It was amazing to see such nice scenery such a close distance from Sydney.
