Crystal Geyser Sept 1

From Gandy we drove east across Utah. Near one of the overlooks on top of the San Rafael Swell we were surprised to find a big horn sheep feasting on the grass on the side of the road (below), apparently indifferent to our passing car. Near Green River we made a detour down to the river to see the Crystal Geyser, a cold water carbon dioxide-driven geyser created when an oil exploration well was drilled in 1935. The geyser erupts up to 40m every 8-22 hours. Needless to say it did not erupt in the few minutes we visited. The high carbon dioxide content lends itself to rapid travertine precipitation. We enjoyed the intricate rimstone pools and colorful travertine cascades as they dropped down to the Green River, over 100ft away. Afterwards we had a tasty meal in the Green River rafter's hangout, Joe's Tavern, then headed on to find a campsite for the night.
