Lower Kern (Miracle-Democrat) June 21

Just a quick jaunt to the Lower Kern for some paddling. Heather and I met up with Keith, Kari, and Maia for a leisurely 850 cfs run on Miracle-Democrat. Kari and Maia rowed their raft, which was sometimes entertaining given the near-raft-minimum flows. I had a silly flip while surfing and another one in one of the last major rapids. Water temperature was great and the scenery was better than I remembered. I saw three northwestern water turtles, which was pretty cool. I found a little hot spring above White Maiden Rapid which was neat. I was surprised that we didn't run into any other groups on the water, but the shore was incredibly busy due to Father's Day, especially at Miracle and Remington hot springs (mid-pandemic and not a facemask in sight of course...). Between the raft and other antics it was a pretty slow run and about 5pm by the time we finally took off. It was nice to get outside.

Thanks to Keith for the suggestion.
