Petroglyphs NM Feb 8-9

A quick walk to the Piedras Marcadas Canyon section of the Petroglyph National Monument to catch the sunset (since the other sections of the monument either had trail closures or close before sunset). I had previously been to the Boca Negra and Rinconada sections of the monument before. Thousands of petroglyphs, some thousands of years old, are carved into black basaltic lava flows with the suburban sprawl of Albuquerque overtaking them on all sides so that the park has to be divided into sections. Some petroglyphs are literally two stone throws away from houses. The juxtaposition fascinates me endlessly.

We parked at a small community park in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. Past the playset and gazebo is a dirt path that leads into the national monument. From here its simply a matter of looking for the petroglyphs on the sides of boulders. Unfortunately the modern graffiti and modern petroglyph bastardizations catch the eye first. We probably saw about a hundred petroglyphs, and quite a few enormous jackrabbits, before the sun shortly set. A great place to daydream about humanity.
